New things on the horizon

We all survived the holiday season and came out the other side with a fresh view for 2012. There is a lot happening at la Tierra as well as in the Aveda family.
On the home front a congratulations is in order for Kelly and Walt who have once again won a spot in Salon Today top 200 Salons. We have won in three categories, and it's quite an honor to be named in the STClass of 2012.

With the addition of Vanessa to our spa family we are excited to be able to offer couples massages now. We have some great specials happening for the week surrounding Valentines Day, we hope to make the couples massage a success.

In the Aveda family we are excited about the new color launch. All of our stylists are excited to start trying it out. So stop in today and see what new color would look great on you.

Also Aveda has launched a product that answers the need for a natural product that addresses hair loss and thinning. It is called Invati and it is flying off the shelves.

A few of our girls recently attended the Aveda Hair show, held every three years, in Minneapolis. This is where the headquarters of Aveda are! Beth and Leslie were able to go on a tour of the factory and see what really goes on behind the scenes.
They also got to experience new products that are going to be released soon, (we can't wait to share them with you) they attended some great educational classes and some amazing hair shows, showcasing Aveda's new Fall/Winter color and cut collection.
This fun event is called Congress and all who attend come back excited and pumped up with renewed enthusiasm for doing hair and being part of the Aveda network.

Delaney is a dual licensed massage therapist and esthetician.

She has joined Lisa in the expanded spa area and with her joining our team we now have three massage therapists, two of which are dual licensed for massage.
We have the ability to do "couples massage" now. We are still working out the kinks and look forward to very soon adding this as a permanent feature of our menu.

10 Common Blowdrying mistakes....and how to fix them!

Problem: Not sectioning your hair:
Solution: Keep clips in your bathroom so that you can easily section your hair. Only blow dry in sections that are small enough that you feel comfortable working with.

Problem: Standing up when you blow dry.
Solution: Keep a chair or stool in your bathroom, or vanity area where you style your hair. When you are comfortably seated you can fully use your upper body strength without getting tired. Trust us this makes a huge difference.

Problem: Holding the brush in the wrong hand.
Solution: Many people hold the hairdryer with their dominant hand and try to work the brush with their weaker hand. You will get better results by working the hairdryer with your weaker hand and the brush with your dominant hand! Give it a try!

Problem: Over twisting the brush.
Solution: Try to never go more than a quarter of a turn with the brush, this will give you smooth tension without risking a snag or snarl. And remember to use a brush size that is correct for your hair. For more information on that talk to your stylist on your next visit.

Problem: Pulling the hair downward at the scalp.
Solution: It is our natural inclination to pull the brush downward, but that will only give you flat results. Instead pull your hair up towards the ceiling, imagining a horse shoe shape coming out of your crown. Hair in the horseshoe should always be blown dry in an upwards position, while hair falling below the horseshoe can be styled downwards for smoothness.

Problem: Holding the dryer to close
Solution: Holding the nozzle of the dryer right next to the area of hair you are working on, doesn't help it dry faster, but only adds to the frizziness. Instead always dry with a nozzle (you know that little attachment that came with the dryer that you threw away :) ) It regulates and directs the heat to the area you are working on, and you get faster drying time with less frizz.

Problem: Holding the dryer in the wrong position
Solution: Keep the nozzle parallel to each section you are working on.

Problem: Keeping the dryer motionless
Solution: Keeping the dryer moving ensures that hair will dry at the same rate all over the head. It will prevent shoulder and wrist strain.

Problem: Going to fast
Solution: It's not a race, we leave precious little time for ourselves in the morning and this can be a bad hair day waiting to happen. Slow it down, blow dry thoroughly and take time to style that amazing cut you got at la Tierra!!

Remember dry in sections, have a seat, use the correct brush and take a little time! You will have a great hair day every day!

Wow, it's been a long time since we have posted! We have been busy around here. It seems like the expansion has been a whirl wind of ongoing work. From workers being here at all hours of the day, to coming in when the salon was closed and moving stuff around, we did hard manual labor too!! :)

The salon looks great! The existing side got a face lift, new paint, shiny floors, new hardware on the existing stations! The existing spa rooms and restrooms also got updated with fresh paint and some new accessories. The new space has two treatment rooms with extra sound proofing so you can really enjoy your facials and massages. We also have a changing room with robes and comfy sandals that you can change into and await your service in the new spa waiting area. It's nice and quiet back there with soothing lighting to get you relaxed and ready for your service.

The new Master Cutting Suite has 6 chairs and six of our stylists have moved over there and are loving the new space. With floor to ceiling mirrors and chandeliers, it really is an enjoyable space to be in and work out of.

The entire staff is very excited about all the changes and look forward to inviting you in to see it soon.

Every year we participate in raising money for earth month. Aveda partners with Western Resource Advocates, located in Boulder and we raise money that goes directly to helping keep Colorado's waters clean.
This year is no different. We have been given a goal that we hope to be able to fulfill, with the help of our great staff and all of our great guests as well.
Last year we raffled off a big basket of Aveda products, and we hope to do some kind of raffle again this year. It heightens awareness and gets everyone involved.
We also sent letters out to the community that included fun ways to donate.
Our staff gets to wear Jeans on Saturdays and pay $5 towards the earth month fund for every Saturday they choose to wear jeans!
If you have any great ideas you would like to share please don't be shy.
Earth month officially kicks off in April with Earth Day being April 22nd.

The new recycling program is here!

We just received the new boxes for the recycling program today. As you may recall we posted an earlier blog stating that we were in the test market for this new recycling program. We are very excited to get this going and to do everything we can to support this new program.

So here's the deal:
Any AVEDA ONLY products that your regular, at home recycling program will not take from you, Aveda wants you to bring it to us. We will collect all that we can and send it back to them, where they will recycle it or re-purpose it. Contributing less to our carbon footprint and helping to live the Aveda mission from the beginning of the products life to it's end.
Please help us send them as much we can. Please remember at this time they are only accepting from us AVEDA products for recycle.

The most relaxing brow wax you will ever have...

I sat in on a training session with one of our estheticians, Lisa and one of our New Artists, Lauren today. Lisa was observing what Lauren was doing, giving pointers, and talking her through what she does for all of her waxing guests. After prepping the face for wax she had Lauren put a few drops of a Chakra oil on her hands and, placing them close to the guests face instructed them to breathe deeply. She then asked Lauren to push down on the guest shoulders, releasing any tension that they were holding in anticipation of the coming procedure. During the treatment she spoke in a calm soft voice while giving various instructions to the guest as well as to Lauren. The same two steps were repeated after the hair removal.

I left the spa room feeling like our guest (Kelly!) had just received a very relaxing spa treatment.

So if you have ever been apprehensive about trying out waxing, please come see our girls here. They will treat you with kindness and consideration, ease your nerves and your mind and you will leave here feeling great about the experience.

Aveda Launches New Recycling Program

If you are familiar with Aveda then you more than likely know the mission statement: "Our mission at Aveda is to care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. At Aveda, we strive to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility not just in the world of beauty but around the world"

The very same mission that we recreated from recycled magazines and won 1st prize for in a contest recently held by Aveda.

In line with that mission statement Aveda has announced to us that they would like all salons in the Denver/Boulder area to take part in a trial Recycling program beginning later this month. We are very excited about being in the test area for this new program and we look forward to all of our guests joining us in helping Aveda do their part as a company to keep our earth beautiful.

A great blowdry at home

We know you love how your stylist does your hair, you leave feeling like a new person, even if you just got a tiny trim! But these easy steps will help you get a salon blow dry at home, so you can look fabulous in between!

Step # 1
Towel dry your hair

Step # 2
Select the product you wish to use in your hair and rub together in your hands. Apply product all over hair and comb through with a fine tooth comb. This evenly distributes the product. If you are using a root lifter, just apply at roots.

Step # 3
Power Dry! Quickly throughout whole head power dry using hands to get most of the moisture out.

Step # 4
Clip 3/4 of your hair up and starting at the bottom, use a paddle brush or round brush to blow dry each section until dry. Continue to drop down sections of hair (only as big as you can work with) and dry them completely.

Step # 5
Make finishing touches with curling iron or flat iron if needed and then use your favorite Aveda hairspray or finishing product to finish the look!

A Before and After...

One of our guests signed up for Aveda's Perfecting Plant Peel series that we offer and allowed us to take a before and after picture to show the dramatic results it can have on hyper-pigmentation (brown spots).
If you purchase a series of 5 plant peels, the ultimate goal is to have one, once a week for 5 weeks.
She has allowed us to post her pictures on our blog to show what a great product this is.

The pictures were taken with no makeup on, this is her skin in it's natural state! During the 5 week process, Lisa our massage therapist/esthetician also worked with her to reshape her brows.
